41 years ago today The Beatles recorded their final song together. I Me Mine; written by Harrison and performed by Harrison on lead vocals & guitar & acoustic guitar, Paul on harmony & bass, organ & piano & Ringo on drums (John had essentially left the group by the time the song was recorded). This early version features Harrison performing part of the song for Ringo & then the band performing it while John waltzes with Yoko. It’s such a great example of their genius mixed with their disjointed separation at the end of their time together. You can see Ringo & George especially trying, but everyone’s mind was in a different place & they were all ready, artistically, to go about on separate ventures, possibly not quite emotionally yet, aside from John, who had his muse & was ready to move on.

The song is about realizations made about the ego during LSD use. George felt a kinship with the song, believed in it’s philosophy & titled his 1980 autobiography after the song where he also discusses the process behind the lyrics.

A lovely version is included on Anthology 3. George is quoted in the liner notes: I Me Mine is the ego problem. There are two ‘I’s: the little ‘i’ when people say ‘I am this’; and the big ‘I’ - ie duality and ego. There is nothing that isn’t part of the complete whole. When the little ‘i’ merges into the big ‘I’ then you are really smiling!
